Although composer and lyricist Jonathan Larson had created another musical named Superbia, and many other songs for children like the ones for “Sesame Street”, they are not as comparable to the success of Rent.

The rock opera is based on Puccini’s La Bohème and is about love and the faithfulness amongst famished artists in New York’s East Village. It tells one year’s story in the lives of the group of bohemians struggling with existence. The story revolves around two roommates, Roger and Mark. As some misfortune in life has made Roger a numbed person, Mark aims at making a film out of Roger’s life story. The plot then follows with how the group faces various issues of modern times like AIDS, love, failure, and life in general.

The musical was released on the 100th anniversary of the original La Bohème at the Nederlander Theatre. Sadly, Jonathan Larson died of an aortic aneurysm on the night of the final preview of “Rent”. However the show went on to become one of the leading success stories in Broadway Theater history. It swept major theatre awards of 1996 which includes the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the Obie Award, three Drama Desk Awards and four Tony Awards.

Rent was one of the very first Broadway theater musicals to include homosexual and bisexual characters. Also the cast was unusually assorted considering their diverse ethnic backgrounds. In 2005, Rent was adapted into a motion picture that features a good number of the original cast members. Later on, Rent was performed in concert theaters to fans all through North America, England, Australia, Japan Germany and many other countries, which helped it to reach a worldwide audience.
